The Green Bank Network (GBN) was launched in 2016 by the Australian Clean Energy Finance Corporation, the Japan Green Fund, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (formerly named Malaysia Green Technology Corporation), Connecticut Green Bank, NY Green Bank, and Green Investment Group (formerly named UK Green Investment Bank). These green banks are working with two United States of America-based non-profits, the Coalition for Green Capital and the Natural Resources Defense Council as secretariat.

Why it mattersĀ

GBN fosters collaboration between green banks

It helps foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among existing green banks on best practices and serves as a network for jurisdictions that seek to establish a green bank. It aims to increase private sector investment flows dedicated to low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure projects by helping private sector investors and developers further partner with Green Banks.

GBN highlights the role of green banks and contributes to standardisation

It also contributes to driving standardisation of deal structures, contracts and metrics; increasing visibility and transparency of green banks; and tracking progress made with key indicators.

GBN disseminates information on green banks

The Green Bank Network has created a Knowledge Center on its website with reports and white papers, slide decks, webinars, and videos, of interest to its membership on climate-related topics. The GBN Knowledge Center includes information collected from green banks around the world, helping other green banks and related financial institutions understand the purpose, mechanics and impact of actual green bank investments.

Main areas of work related to climate mainstreaming:

The Green Bank Network offers knowledge sharing through a series of webinars, a knowledge centre and by organizing and taking part in events gathering green banks and other partners.

Webinars organized to date include topics such as: Green Banks and Economic Recovery; The Role of Public Sector Banks for Catalysing Private Sector Investments; Green Bank Design in the Southeast United States; Integrating Climate Resilience into Infrastructure Investments; and Unlocking Clean Energy Investment in the Commercial & Industrial Sectors.
